Monday was spent almost entirely on trying to sort out the inner barrel, due to the recoil the barrel was working it's way loose and coming off the hop-up unit. So in order to us to stop it we had to put a screw in to hold the barrel... and in order to to that we had to put a bit of weld on the mid-barrel so that there'd be enough threading. This however caused problems as part of the mid-barrel got a blur in it from the welding. Meaning the barrel would no longer fit and we had no direct access to the area that needed cleaning up. After several hours of trying to modify tools to reach a good 300-odd-mm down the mid-barrel we finally managed to clear it.
Thursday we started work on the box mag, the idea being further developed on from the M60 box mag I did previously. This time the system is designed to be wireless - no wires leaving the box mag. We used an old M4 hi-cap, removed the coil spring inside and glued the wind-wheel directly on to it.
The servo is modified, made so that it can do constant rotation and not the limited arc it's designed for. The circuitry is bypassed and the wires soldered directly to it's motor. Around the gears in the top half is a small little stopper bit that had to be removed.
In this next photo you can see the cut off switch being pressed by the servo.
The tension spring & adjustment screw installed, the top of the hi-cap is cut off. Also installed is a wire to create active-motor breaking so the servo doesn't creep back.
And if you're wondering how it works, here's a little video:
We work out the best placement for the wind system in relation to everything else;
With it's placement decided we start cutting and bending the plasti-card ammo tray
Goes in nicely:
After that photo was taken we trimmed down the top of the old M4 mag so it was flush with the plasti-card. It still needs more work, to be properly finished off.
With the feed working we decided to take it to sunday's game and give it a try out :D
MadDog loads the inert rounds in;
In the field:
Everyone had a bit of a go on it, the gun must have fired at least 5000 rounds - it got some heavy use in the games. I got to use it in a base defence mission where it did an absolutely brilliant job of keeping people's heads down, it was also managing to out range every gun on the field despite being within the FPS limits :D
